Google Caffeine – How will it affect your Search Rankings?
Google recently announced on 10 August that it is launching an improved version of its search engine soon. This main reason is because it’s original file system has become outdated for the amount of data now available on the web, especially with the increasing number of real-time social media applications we use, so by distributing data in smaller chunks it can its search engine technology is going to be faster, better and more accurate. In Matt Cutt’s words, this is “the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions”.
So how will this affect your site? Probably you will not notice much difference. You can go see if your site is ranking as it should at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ – however make sure you add your country and language variables after the link… i.e. hl = language and gl = country code
… so for example in the UK you would need to go to http://www2.sandbox.google.com/search?hl=en&gl=uk
Here are the main differences I have noticed…
- Caffeine seems to be better at finding and removing duplicate content from the results, especially video
- Caffeine seems to have different criteria for displaying double or indented results for the same site
- Caffeine seems to show less universal search results, in particular images and video
- Caffeine seems to place more importance on keywords nearer the front of the web page TITLE tag
If you have notice any differences on your own search rankings please leave your observations in a comment below.
There does not seem to be an exact date when the changes will roll out, however it is likely that they will roll them out gradually to one data center at a time.

Caffeine seems to have got MUCH better at detecting duplicate content for examples articles which have been submitted to hundreds of article directories.
